Work Trends 2023: How to Enter the Job Market and Win

96% of people polled in one study report that they are looking for a new job in 2023.

That number is a huge number of people in the job market...so if you are one of those people, you may be wondering how you are going to stand out amongst the rest of the people looking for work!

For starters, you need to know the work trends of 2023 to really be able to enter the job market and win the job you want. Not only that, but you want to keep the job and be successful.

So what do you need to know before getting started?

Here are a few tips to help you out!

Know Your Career Goals

More and more people in 2023 are chasing jobs that they actually will like. Only about 32% of the workforce actually feels engaged at work at the moment, but more people would prefer to chase something that makes them feel good about what they do.

In other words, they want to pursue their dreams or their overall mission and purpose in life.

So, before you start looking for a job in 2023, consider what matters to you.
Ask yourself:

  • What are my passions?
  • What is my purpose of being here and what should I be doing with that purpose?
  • What makes me happy to do and doesn't feel like "work"?

By asking yourself these questions, you will know your career goals and learn more about the path you want to take.

Focus on Your Resume and Portfolio

Your resume should be up-to-date and tailored to the specific jobs you're applying for. This means that if you are applying for one job that has to do with social media management, you should have that experience and work-related experience at the top of your resume. You should also focus on those skills and offerings for that job.

On the other hand, if you are applying for a teaching position, you need to have relevant experience for that at the top of your resume (even if in the past or on the side you still do social media management!). Tailor every aspect of your resume to the specific job you're applying for.

If you are applying to multiple jobs, then you are going to want to tailor each resume specifically to those jobs.

You also need to home in on your online presence. If you are a photographer, you should have an online portfolio that showcases these talents. If you are a social media manager, you should have online examples easily accessible to show what you have done in the past in regard to social media.

Everything that you do online and in your portfolio should be professional and showcase your skills and expertise in the industry. Having this online presence makes a huge difference when applying for jobs because not only does it state the skills and experience you have, it shows it.

Leverage Your Network

A lot of the success that you will find in life is not about your experience and what you have done. It is more about the people that you know and the people that you will meet along the way.

The power of your network should never be underestimated, and you definitely don't want to underutilize this network either.

Networking is one of the best ways to find job opportunities, especially these days now that 2023 is here. It is one of the best ways to find people who you can connect with. By doing this, you can learn more about opportunities that you otherwise wouldn't know about or be able to apply for without the network.

Be Flexible

One of the most important things you can do in the workforce and when applying for jobs in 2023 is to be flexible. Not everything is going to be perfect the first time around.

Additionally, the job market is really competitive. That means if you are only okay with one thing, you are most likely going to be disappointed if it doesn't work out. You need to have options, don't just hone in on one option.

In 2023, you need to be willing to adapt to different and changing circumstances. This could be while looking for a job or once you get one. Nowadays, you may be expected to do a bit more than what your job title may state.

If you want to be successful, that is something that you have to come to terms with.

Persistence Is the Name of the Game

Finding a job is not something that happens overnight. It can be a long and challenging process that comes with a lot of obstacles.

However, it will be worth it in the end—you just need to spend the time to get there!

You need to apply to jobs consistently (several per day), network at every opportunity, and develop your skills daily.

If you are not getting a job right away, this just means to keep going and to expand where and what you are looking at.

One of the best things you can do for yourself at this point is to develop your skills. If you are looking for a job in the coding industry, start learning more about coding on YouTube or take a class. The same goes for photography—if you want to get better and get a job in the space and industry, you need to take the steps to develop the skills for it.

This is on you to do—and the more you do it, the more confident you will feel in yourself and your abilities. This will be noticeable to anyone that you have an interview with as well.

Developing Your Skills

So how exactly can you develop your skills when you are out of college and looking for a job? There are so many ways to learn more and get better at something!

For starters, you can attend workshops that you find online near you. Going in person can be a huge advantage as you are able to network with people, learn hands-on, and practice more with a professional.

However, if you can't attend a workshop, you can still do more to hone your skills.

You can find online courses to take in your industry. You can also look up information on YouTube University to learn more about the skills you need to get better.

Additionally, you may even want to spend time learning skills that don't have to do with your potential career. Maybe you've always wanted to learn how to run better - go do that! Maybe you want to get better at photography for just your hobby and weekends!

Whatever it is you want to do, developing your personal and professional skills will make you a more rounded and overall better person.

Expect Hybrid Work

After COVID, the face of the workplace and work industry changed. It is no longer 'normal' to go into the workplace 5 days a week for 8 hours or more a day.

Instead, more and more people work from home. Remote work is the face of the future, but there are still places that also rely on a hybrid workplace. This means that you would go into the office some days out of the week to show face, network, and have meetings, but other times you will be working from home.

You need to be aware of what your workplace expects from you when you apply for a job so you know if it will work for you. For instance, if you thrive with human connection, you will want to focus on getting a job that works in the hybrid space so that you feel as though you get what you need.
